You probably heard of Atlantis an island kingdom mentioned in Plato’s work. Controversy abounds around the real versus mythical nature of this island. Atlantis is one of the biggest mysteries in world history and literature.

Described by Plato as an island larger than Libya and Asia put together, Atlantis was supposedly located in the Atlantic just beyond the “Pillars of Hercules“ (generally assumed to mean the Strait of Gibraltar), and protected by Poseidon. According to Plato, Poseidon named the island and the ocean surrounding it after his sun Atlas and made him King of Atlantis. At its peak of power legend says, Atlantis conquered parts of Africa and Europe, but was later defeated by Ancient Athens and then by divine punishment was devastated by earthquakes and floods, and sank in the sea.
